Sir,
Mo
With reference to your letter No. 6295 of the 15th February, I am directed by the Shipping Controller to inform you that he is anxious to obtain further particulars of the Norwegian Steamers stated in the letter from the Board of Trade of the 24th July to the Colonial Office to
BT 14910 be building by the Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock Company
Limited at Hong Kong. The particulars desired are the classification of the steamers, their dead-weight capacity, draught, the size of their engines and boilers and the boiler pressure. Sir Joseph Maclay would also be glad to be informed when the steamers will be ready for delivery and whether there is any passenger accommodation, and if so of what kind.
I am to explain in this connection that although in
6295 their letter of the 2nd February the Shipping Control
58699
Committee concurred in the views expressed in the telegram from the Colonial Office to the Governor of Hong Kong of the 23rd December the position has now changed, and that the
7 Controller is now considering whether steps should not be taken to acquire for H. M. Government any suitable neutral steamers that may be building in the Company's Yard at Hong Kong.
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office, S. W.
